As the pursuit of youthful, radiant skin continues to evolve, one technique that has gained immense popularity in the esthetic world is microneedling. It has definitely become the main buzzword in the realm of skincare, hailed for its ability to revitalize and rejuvenate the skin without invasive procedures or lengthy downtime.

As a surgical medispa, treating clients throughout Long Island, there has been a recent uptick in curiosity surrounding microneedling. “What is it?”  “Who is it for?” “What should I expect?” “What will it do to my skin?” “Are there any drawbacks?” “What can I expect afterwards? “Can I do this at home?” These are just some of the questions I get asked daily regarding microneedling.

I personally fell in love with microneedling the minute I completed my first session. I immediately felt my skin was refreshed, tightened and looked radiant. The response was dramatic over the next few days, resulting in brilliant bouncy skin that was visibly hydrated and glowing from within. From that moment on, I wanted to deliver those exact results to every single one of my clients. So… I dove deep into the theory and practice of microneedling. Read on and let me share a little of that knowledge with you…

Microneedling, Simply Put…

Microneedling is a cosmetic procedure that encourages collagen production using a pen-like device that has micro-needles at the tip. These needles pierce the skin causing micro-injuries, stimulating the skin’s natural healing response. This healing response prompts the skin to produce collagen and elastin to heal itself, thus healing skin imperfections along with it. Microneedling helps with a range of common skin concerns such as: fine lines, wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, acne scars, stretch marks, loose skin, dry skin condition, and dull/rough skin conditions. Microneedling is a safe and effective way to rejuvenate the complexion and slow visible signs of aging.

Microneedling, Suitable Candidate

Microneedling is versatile and suitable for all skin types and tones. Individuals dealing with acne scars, fine lines, wrinkles, uneven skin tone, or mild sagging may find microneedling beneficial. However, those with active acne, infections, or certain skin conditions may be better served by other treatments, depending on the severity, which will be discussed and explained during a cosmetic consult with Dr. Meneshian.

Microneedling, Spa vs. Home

While at-home microneedling devices are available, I always lean towards professional treatments when it comes to things like this. Spa over at-home is definitely the way to go. Having microneedling done in a spa, you are ensuring the use of medical-grade equipment and the expertise of a trained esthetician. Spa visits yield a more uniform and pronounced result that is safe and effective. The only thing at-home devices really offer is convenience. They won’t penetrate the skin deep enough to really make any significant changes, plus you risk infection by improper cleaning and sterilizing. You could also cause permanent scarring if not performed correctly. Don’t be lazy, get your butt into a spa!!!

Microneedling, Benefits

Yes, you look fabulous after a single or multiple sessions of microneedling, but benefits of microneedling go way beyond the surface of the skin. There is better product absorption & function. It may help with issues such as acne (non-active), hyperpigmentation, scars, stretch marks and sun damage. Microneedling will delay the signs of aging, prompting the skin to produce collagen and elastin. So, if I were you, I would get into NY Face Place and have a treatment as soon as possible. But before that, you should know about some of the things required of you once you leave the spa.

Microneedling, Aftermath

Although microneedling has little to no downtime, here are some things to expect for the first few days…

Day 1: Red appearance of the skin which will vary depending on your treatment and depth of the penetration of the needles.

Day 2: Redness or pinkness will be similar to a moderate sunburn. Slight swelling may be more noticeable.

Day 3: Skin may still be pink or have returned to normal color. Swelling will likely have subsided.

Some Do’s & Don’ts to know…

  • Wash your face (gently) a few hours after treatment. Do not use sunscreen for a couple days following treatment.
  • 1-3 days afterwards your skin will be very dry and feel tight. Use a good moisturizer as frequent as needed to help alleviate this condition.
  • After the first few days you can return to using your regular skincare, reintroduction of Vitamin A (retinol) is good at this time.
  • Avoid alcohol-based products for 2 weeks.
  • Sun exposure should be avoided for 5 days post treatment. Make sure to use SPF!!!
