What should you expect when you have eyelid surgery (also called blepharoplasty)? First, we should explain the purpose of this procedure. The eyes are one of the parts of the face that start to tell others what our age is, even if we try to take good care of our appearance. Sagging excess skin can create a puffy effect.

Eyelid surgery can reverse this process and provide a more youthful eye appearance. This is accomplished by the following:

  • Tightening of the skin to prevent drooping eyelids

  • Eyelid contouring

  • Removal of fat bags under the eyes

  • Correction of any asymmetry between the eyes

Eyelid Surgery Recovery

Eyelid surgery is performed using light sedation and local anesthesia. Because the incision needed for the upper eyelid portion of the surgery is made in the crease of the lids, there should be no visible incision following recovery. However, the area surrounding the eyes will likely be swollen for several days. You may also experience some blurry vision – this is a normal part of the recovery process and not a cause for alarm.

After five to seven days, your stitches will be removed. Swelling and any bruising should be gone within ten days. However, once the stitches are out, you can use makeup to cover any redness or bruising. Most patients take a week off from work. It will take 10-14 days before you are fully healed and ready to show off your new look.
