Laser hair removal is the revolutionary way to remove unwanted hair. Using light to destroy hair at the root, laser hair removal is faster than other methods like electrolysis. Although you can have laser hair removal treatment at any time, it is important to avoid the sun as much as possible for awhile before and after treatment. That means summer may not be the best time to schedule an appointment, but fall is a great time. With the days getting shorter and the sun less intense, it’s a perfect time to start your sessions.
Laser hair removal works by targeting the hair follicle. The pigment in the follicle absorbs the laser light, which is converted to heat, which then destroys the hair at the root. Unlike electrolysis, laser hair removal can tackle several hairs at a time, so the process is much faster. A small area, such as the upper lip, can be completed in a short amount of time. The laser can generally cover an area the size of quarter every second. There is no pain during the procedure, and the surrounding skin is left undamaged.
Even the darkest hair can be removed with laser hair removal because color pigment is the key to the process. The laser equipment is adjusted for each client based on their hair and skin color. You may have heard that laser hair removal works best for people with light skin and dark hair, but today’s advanced laser technology allows people with any skin color or hair color to have good results. Laser hair removal can be done for men or women and on nearly any part of the body. While it’s great for unwanted facial hair, it can also be done on legs, arms, underarms, the chest , the back, or anywhere except very close to the eyes.
Staying out of the sun is important for about 72 hours before a treatment session. The sun can make your skin more sensitive, even if you are not burned or tanned. If you have a hair removal session after sun exposure, the procedure may not work correctly, or your skin may be too sensitive and could burn. It is also possible for complications like skin discoloration or even scarring to occur with too much sun exposure. You should also avoid excessive sun for a few days after a treatment. Just run on. We are in the fall and no one is in the sun any longer so why embellish on it!
After a laser hair removal treatment, you may see some, but not all, of the hair that was treated begin to fall off. Because hair grows in cycles, but not every hair on the body is on the same cycle, it can take several treatments to successfully destroy all the hairs you want to be removed. Between sessions you may see hairs that grow back come in lighter in color or finer than they were before.
Individual laser treatment sessions should be scheduled about 4-6 weeks. At NY Face Place we make it easy to schedule monthly treatments with our six-month packages. Starting in the fall means that your total treatment should be completed by shorts and swimsuit season the next year.
