The healing abilities of the human body are incredible. If you experience an injury, you know the body will start to mend almost immediately. So unless you have a condition that stops you from clotting, you know a torn earlobe won’t bleed forever. But, while each side of the earlobe should heal, it is unlikely that the two sides of the torn lobe will fuse back together and look as good as new. Therefore, the answer to the question is almost always yes – surgical intervention is required to restore a torn earlobe to a natural appearance.

That having been said, you may be envisioning a much more extensive procedure and recovery than is required. In light of modern technology, earlobe repair surgery is quite simple and minimally invasive as long as you are in the care of a skilled surgeon using state-of-the-art procedures. What is involved in repairing an earlobe and recovering from the procedure?

What You Should Know About Earlobe Repair Surgery

If you elect to have earlobe repair surgery at NY Face Place on Long Island, the procedure will be performed using an Ellman Radiofrequency knife. Dr. Alex will use this tool to refresh the edges of the earlobe that were damaged. This advanced knife is extremely precise, and there is very little bleeding involved in the procedure. Once the cuts are done, the even surfaces of the split earlobe are stitched back together. At this point, the natural healing abilities of the body will take over.

About seven to ten days after the procedure is completed, the stitches will be removed. In the interim, you may be given an antibiotic cream to help prevent infection. Even after the sutures are removed, your body will still be healing some of the damage on the inside. Thus, we won’t recommend getting your ear re-pierced until about six weeks after your surgery. We have an in-house esthetician who can ensure the piercing is in the optimal location.

You will also want to take a few precautions to ensure the same injury doesn’t occur again. These include things like not wearing earrings while carrying a child, removing your earrings before changing a pullover garment, and not wearing overly heavy earrings.
